The Newbie Guide for Fly Fishing
According to a certain author, Izaac Walton, fly fishing is the ‘the contemplative man’s recreation’. This was termed as such probably because of the nature of this leisure (or sport, as others would prefer to call it). It is thoroughly relaxing, giving you time to reflect on different things.
If you are thinking of doing this anytime soon, do understand that there are several things which you will still need. Fly fishing isn’t just about going to the nearest river with a fishing rod, after all.
To help you start, here are some tips for the fly fishing neophyte:
Starting Off
Like most things, if you are not knowledgeable about fly fishing, the first thing that you will have to do is research about this very well by reading as many books and texts about the subject. Other people do not think that theories aren’t important as long as you are practicing often. But believe me now when I say that it is.
Shopping for the Equipment
There are different kinds of equipment which you may need when you do fly fishing. There are fly rods, fly lines, leaders, and reels. Take note of the different specifications even before you buy these things so that you would not have to waste your time in the sports shop.
Besides the actual equipment that you will need, you might want to go and shop for the wading gear. These will basically help you not get wet while you are doing fly fishing (after all, it would be better that you are in the water doing this sport). There are hippers and chest-high suits, boot foots and stocking foot and a wading staff.
Other things which you may really need for fly fishing are fishing vests (since these may have pockets and all where you can keep different stuff in), flotation devices (just in case you are not a very good swimmer) and wading belts which are worn not on the waist, but on the chest area.
Extra Equipment
If you have extra cash, then go ahead and shop for the other needs which can help you in fly fishing. These include forceps, fly boxes (with coil clips, ripple foams, etc.), hats, rain gears, leader wallets, spools and, just for your security, you might want to have an extra set of keys made as well.
Practice Makes Perfect
We really do not need to expound much on this. If you want to be good in this sport and maybe catch a fish every now and then, you should really practice as often as you could.
Some think that the skill can be very difficult to learn especially if you do not have all the necessary get-up and equipment. But that is not really an accurate observation. As long as you have the basic needs for fly fishing, all you need to practice is the hand and eye coordination which is one of the most important skills in this sport.
There are some people who start fly fishing just to learn another way of fishing. Others consider this some sort of religion and philosophy. Whatever reason you have for doing this, it is truly one way of bringing yourself closer to nature.
